AksharBharati is an initiative started by a handful of IT professionals at Pune in 2007, to nurture the reading habits in children from poor and underpriviledged areas of India. Today AksharBharati with the help of its 800+ volunteers from various companies, schools and NGOs has started 170+ libraries in and around Pune, rest of Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, J&K, Meghalaya etc. An AksharBharati library contains around 1000 brand new books in Hindi, English and local language for children of age group 5-16 yrs. The books are non-academic books supplementing the study activities and the categories range from competitive exams, personality development, activity, hobbies, novels, biographies, story collections, learning aid etc. One such book set costs around Rs. 20,000 (original price around Rs. 40,000) procured at a discounted rate from the publishers directly. After establishing the library AksharBharati volunteers typically keep a contact with the library owners to ensure its proper utilization, new requirements etc. and also conduct various activities at those libraries for personality development and nurturing reading habits so that children can develop the wisdom to take right decisions in life which will help enhance the quality of their life.
